Aveiras de Baixo, is one of the parishes of Azambuja, Lisboa district, lies about five kilometers from the municipality and occupies an area of one thousand eight hundred eighty-eight hectares. Its adjacent parishes are Vale do Paraíso to the north, Azambuja in the south and Santarém district to the east.

The villages that constitute the parish are: Virtudes, Casais da Lagoa, Casais da Amendoeira (in part), Casais Telégrafos, Casais Firminos and part of Vale da Pedra. The beauty of its lush vegetation and brook of Aveiras do the honors to those who want to escape the city whirlwind.

Possibly the toponym of this parish is due to the fact that its grantees were the Counts of Aveiras. We know that once the parish was designated Veiras.

It is known that in 1147 D. Afonso Henriques, conquers the cities of Santarém and Lisbon and most of the valley of Tejo, however is not known, when the parish was formed. D. Sancho I, in January 1207, assigned letter of tenure to inhabitants of Aveiras de Baixo, being later confirmed in Santarém, by D. Sancho II, in the year 1218. The development of the region meant that the July 1, 1401, D. João I grant the letter of elevation of the parish to town.
In March 1493, D. João II was in Aveiras de Baixo, when Christopher Columbus returned from America. The meeting with the monarch and Colombo was made in the parish of Vale do Paraíso. With the renewal of charters, D. Manuel gives new charter letter to the town of Aveiras de Baixo in September 13, 1513.

The earthquake of November 1, 1755 shook Lisbon area, causing havoc in all the parishes and villages, reaching also Aveiras de Baixo. The losses were huge, as was the recovery. Come the year 1842, the county of Aveiras de Baixo is extinguished, becoming a parish belonging to the municipality of Azambuja.

The patron saint of the parish is Our Lady of the Rosary. The Rosary born out of love for Mary, in medieval times, possibly in the time of the Crusades in the Holy Land. The chaplet is of very ancient origin, from the time that the men who lived alone in the mountains or desert (hermits), used stones to count prayers.
In medieval monasteries, St. Bede the Venerable, suggested the union of several grain stuffed into a string, for the recitation of the Our Father and Hail Marys. According to legend, Our Lady appeared to St. Dominic and taught him the recitation of the Rosary as a weapon against heretics. Thus was born the devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, which has the meaning of a wreath of roses offered to Our Lady.
